"Managing Stress on IT Projects"

Stressed graphic Stress is defined as “the adverse reaction people have to excessive demands that are placed upon them”. Project environments can be hotbeds for contributing to stress that can have significant negative effects on achieving project objectives. Project Managers have to be aware of their legal requirements, plus deal with the moral and financial implications of workplace stress. Project managers need to look after their team, but also themselves. The talk looks at the factors that can contribute to stress in project environments and their effects.

Also included is a look at tools and techniques for avoiding factors that contribute towards stress, plus awareness of spotting the signs and symptoms. It also includes details of the Health and Safety Executive's Management Standards and free to download tools that can be used to integrate into existing working practices. Stress is often used in a negative frame, however proper management of stress factors can produce positive benefits in terms of reduced staff turnover, reduced sickness absenteeism, improved team morale, productivity and effectiveness.

Our speaker, Stewart Hill, spent over ten years as a project manager, working mainly for small and medium consultancies plus three years at Dun and Bradstreet, working on projects in the financial services and automotive sectors. During that time, he came to recognise the harm stress was causing in fast moving and competitive environments. His interest in personal development encouraged him to turn his career focus to stress management. He works with corporate clients to provide stress management training, perform stress audits, and to implement work-life balance projects to enable them to take positive steps to tackle stress in the workplace. He also works one-to-one with people who due to stress, have suffered from anxiety, depression, anger, or a lack of motivation. Stewart holds qualifications in Stress Management, Business Performance Coaching and Hypnotherapy. He is a member of the International Stress Management Association and serves on its Executive Committee.
