"Software Estimating"
In many cases a successful project is one that meets a time and cost target that has been estimated by someone somewhere.
The quality of this estimate will set the underlying probability of successfully completing the project. This presentation
will discuss the basic factors that effect software estimation, and aims to show the benefits of formalising the
estimation process to increase the understanding of key decisions that form the basis of an estimate.
It will introduce the critical factors that ensure that we base our projects on information and assumptions
that are clearly defined; easily understood and credible. It will also introduce the basic laws that
govern software development, and the effect on project schedule.
Our speaker, Andy Langridge trained as a mechanical engineer Andrew worked for many years in the manufacturing industry
in both direct shop floor roles and later in supervisory and management positions. As IT systems became more prevalent in
manufacturing Andrew joined several internal implementation teams delivering enterprise systems to the internal users.
For the last 15 years Andrew has been bringing IT systems to manufacturing companies to improve productivity and profitability.
Working with both industry and Academia he has contributed to several EPSRC projects resulting in new software tools being
brought to market to improve the productivity of the UK manufacturing industry. Most recently Andrew worked on the
outsourcing of midlife software updates to India and globalisation/translation projects involving the coordination and
management of teams in India, Brazil and Germany. Andy is an active member of The ACostE EMC committee and also
is one of the growing numbers of UK SCEA members. Andy has been with Galorath since November 2002.
