Project Management in the Film Industry
We consume the products of the film and television industries on a regular basis, but rarely stop to think about
the way they are produced. Each film, TV series, episode or programme is developed using project and programme management
techniques that are particular to the media industry.
A film project goes through the same stages as an IT-enabled business change project, and IT plays a different role at each stage.
Come along and explore the media industry's approaches, and learn about the roles that IT plays in the development process.
Explore the parallels with your approach (you might consider the ‘Book’ to be equivalent of the Mandate, and the Shooting
Script to be the Brief, etc…). Not only will this be an entertaining multi-media lecture on the way the film industry works, but you might also
find something you can use in your day job to help make your project management approaches more compelling and eye-catching.
Our speaker, Aidan Boulter is currently the Business Manager of the Guild of British Camera Technicians. He started in the
entertainment industry as a stagehand in regional theatre, and progressed to Assistant Lighting Director, then spent 16 years in
British television. Starting as a Staff Floor Assistant for Thames Television in 1979, he progressed to First Assistant Director on
freelance TV productions. In 1995 he switched into the film industry as a First Assistant Director then moved into Studio
production and management in 2000. Aidan is a visiting lecturer at the National Film School and is able to pass on his knowledge
in an entertaining and visually stimulating way.
