"New Age Project Management: Objectives and Execution as One"
"If you don't know where you are going, any road will do," and "an objective that
cannot be implemented is worthless."
You know the discussion. Some projects are perceived as never working well enough, or never on time,
or never on budget, or never achieving the desired results. It is no wonder that senior management
is frustrated with computer technology in general, and IT projects in particular.
Are the causes related to expectations, or delivery, or something else? Are the tools bad,
the objectives fuzzy, or has the world changed to the point that our approaches need to change?
Our speaker will be Jim Warren, Managing Partner of JD Warren Associates in San Francisco, who
believes that in today's world, project management is about keeping your eye on the objective,
and executing well - managing both the objectives and execution simultaneously with allowances
for both to change, within the project, for the right reasons. He argues that successful
project management is a science, a business and an art form. He believes that our project
management philosophy and tools are out-dated and must change. He has been quoted as saying "be
directionally correct, and execute for speed". During his 28 year career as a management consultant,
Jim has implemented over 200 projects and initiatives all over the globe. He will share some contemporary
ideas and concepts in an engaging manner designed to stimulate your thinking. He will briefly outline
project management techniques and approaches, discuss inherent limitations, and suggest the
directions that new age project management should go. This will not be a lecture, or an
academic exercise; rather, it will be a dialogue on how we might move forward the creating
the project management approach for the 21st century.
